Applied Digital Alchemy
Welcome to peterjohnson.net.
Research and application of advanced techniques and technologies for interactive experiences and multimedia in performance environments
A standard definition of "alchemy" is any magical power or process of transmuting a common substance, usually of little worth, into something of great value.
Alchemy, as the term is used here, refers to taking raw, base materials such as computer hardware, software components and media assets and combining, processing and manipulating them to create a compelling experiential product. Combining visual art, sound and technology is something more than a simple nuts-and-bolts task; innovative interactive media is modern-day wizardry, manifesting Arthur C. Clarke dictum, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
Peter Johnson embodies the idea of bringing together multiple disciplines towards a single, integrated praxis. His background includes degrees in Computer Science and Studio Art (film/video and digital media emphasis) as well as extensive music production work, combined with experience in creative direction, project management, production and technical direction.
The idea that there is more to human experience than what can happen exclusively in the context of a computer screen has been central to his working philosophy, and has driven him to explore the ways in which technology can be connected and integrated with the larger environment - from process monitoring in a nuclear power station to lighting control in rock club.
His professional experience in interactive media spans over ten years, manifesting a passion to develop new ways to use technology to create compelling - immersive, expressive, informative - interactive experiences for corporate clients, museums and educational institutions and in galleries and entertainment venues.
During this time he has worked with several major agencies including Jack Morton Worldwide, Digitas, and Inhance Digital (holding titles such as Senior Designer, Interactive Media Architect, and Technologist) for clients that include Deutsche Bank, GM, NASA, Boeing, Intel, and Baxter. Having first started working as a software developer in high school, his technical direction for current projects rests on a solid software engineering foundation, including projects for Microsoft, Lotus, and Avid (maker of the Media Composer and Film Composer non-linear editing systems).
Peter is also active as a performing musician and video artist.
